While we fully understand the desire to utilize insurance and the financial challenge out of pocket costs may present, we do not bill patient insurance or provide the Superbills for patients to do so themselves. Here is why:
In general, insurance companies are not focused on preventive or wellness services. They are heavily invested in the conventional model of health care that too often relies on narrow-minded diagnoses with too-broad drug and surgery treatments. For an insurance company to accept a claim, a specific diagnosis code is required along with a procedure code. We are committed to the functional medicine model that addresses the underlying causes of your symptoms with specific nutritional and lifestyle recommendations. We do not attempt to diagnose diseases, a necessity when submitting an insurance claim. The philosophy of Functional Medicine is in direct conflict with the requirements of conventional model health insurance companies.
Additionally, when providers bill health insurance companies directly, they are required to become "participating providers". The doctors must sign a contract that allows the insurance company to determine which services they will and will not provide and how much they can charge for those services. A participating provider must agree to accept the fees the insurance company establishes, regardless of whether the fees are reasonable or applicable to that practice. In general, these established fees cover the actual cost of the briefest (and we believe the lowest quality) care. In today’s healthcare environment, the actual cost for doctors to provide services continues to rise, while the percentage of reasonable fees that insurance payments cover is declining. Unfortunately, we have found that even if these factors were a non issue, we could not be participating providers in the insurance networks and provide the time-intensive, well researched, expert care that we do.
Hopefully you have had the time to review the extensive list of features our private practice package includes. It has been priced to reflect the total value of the individual services and we believe that value is apparent. What may not be evident is the time and effort put into the analysis and management of each case. Multiple hours are spent evaluating the various elements of each patient's condition and additional hours are needed to create the customized health and lifestyle plan. It is with all this time in mind that we have appropriately priced our packages.
Patients in the traditional medical cycle often complain that their doctor/medical facility doesn’t take appropriate time with them or their case or does little to nothing in the way of truly preventive medicine. We want you to understand that preventive health care takes considerable time and expertise on the part of the doctor and therefore may, but will not always, cost more than a conventional medical office visit.
We will issue a full refund, for any reason, for any service that has not yet been performed. We attach specific value to all services included in our packages (including time behind the scenes, such as review of intake forms or plan creation). A refund may be requested at any time. The amount of the refund is calculated by subtracting the value of the services and resources you have already received from the total amount paid. Payment for lab services can not be returned if your sample has been submitted, even if results have not yet been received. If you have received a test kit but have not submitted your sample, a refund can be issued. Refunds cannot be given based on individual results from your program.
